To be completely honest I sort of fell into the world of public relations after a friend got me a job interview at the brilliant Interdependence PR firm, which actually turned out to be the happiest accident I’ve veer had. For the last 5 years I have worked in this industry and it is the perfect place for me in terms of what I have to offer and what the job is able to offer me. If you are thinking about a career in public relations then I wanted to share with you why I love it, to give you an idea of what you can expect.
Lots of People
I really love working with a variety of people and this is the perfect job for you if you are a people person. Much of my work for the agency involves event planning and that means that I get the chance to speak to all parties involved from the client to the hotel or event space, as well as those working in the media. If you are a people person then I honestly can’t think of a better job which will give you the opportunity to converse and communicate with such a broad range of people.
Learning
Because every client is different, and because we need to perfectly understand what their business is an how their marketplace operates, you learn so much about different industries and sectors within this job role. As soon as we get a new client who operates in a sector which we haven’t worked within before, it is essential that we hustle to learn about it in order to deliver the best results for our clients.
Variety
Prior to working in PR I was in a job where everyday looked the same as the day before, nothing ever changed and as a result I used to get so bored. In my current role however I can honestly say that I have no idea what to expect from day to day and I absolutely adore this variation. One day could be all meetings, the next could be calling around clients and the next could be working with the creative team on a press release. If you want a job which isn’t monotonous then this is most definitely the career choice for you, it is always different!
Creative
There is really no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to PR and every single client that we have has different requirements. This means that as a PR team we have to get creative with the way that we handle our clients and this is something else within the job that I really enjoy. You can really let your creative juices go crazy when you are working in PR and you are being constantly challenged to do just that.
This is a wonderful job for those with energy, creativity, drive and a passion for people, and I absolutely adore it!
